Fujinon HA 18X7.6BERD-S18 – Lenses

The HA18x7.6BERD is a 2/3" B4-mount lens compatible with all standard B4-mount HD cameras (Sony ELC, Grass Valley LDK, Hitachi, Panasonic P2 HD series, etc.). B4 is a mechanical and electrical standard, so mechanical fit is guaranteed. However, full servo responsiveness and lens metadata handshake depend on your camera's CCU and RCP firmware supporting digital lens protocols. Verify your camera manufacturer's lens compatibility list and confirm CCU firmware is current before deployment. Legacy CCUs may require manual iris/focus fallback.

The integrated 2× extender is switchable via servo control and extends focal length to 274 mm (15.2–274 mm range). Fujinon's internal optics are factory-corrected for this extender's chromatic aberration and telecentricity, so quality loss is minimal compared to external converters. The trade-off is increased minimum iris (f/2.4 at 137 mm) and slightly reduced transmission. For critical long-throw studio work, the internal extender is optically sound; for ENG mobility, you save weight by avoiding a separate module.

The HA18x7.6BERD uses Fujinon's standard digital servo control architecture, typically operating over a multi-pin servo cable (part of the B4 camera harness). Control is integrated through the camera's RCP; third-party compatibility depends on your camera model's servo protocol implementation. Fujinon lenses work natively with Sony, Grass Valley, and Hitachi B4 systems. If using remote heads or specialized focus controllers, confirm that the head's servo output is compatible with your specific camera CCU. Consult your camera OEM before adopting non-native RCP solutions.

At 0.6 m (approximately 2 feet), the lens is suitable for near-field interviews and detail shots. Minimum focus distance is mechanically locked; you cannot exceed it. Breathing (focal length shift during focus adjustment) is controlled but present, especially at wide focal lengths in close-up scenarios—typical for this zoom class. Focus tracking via servo is smooth and responsive. In live OB, practice pull-to-focus sequences before air time. Field-swapping focus knob speed via RCP settings helps reduce visible focus-drift during studio multi-camera production.

At 1.58–1.65 kg, the lens is mid-range weight for an 18× broadcast zoom. On pan-tilt heads (studio or ENG), balance depends on your camera body mass and head payload rating. Confirm your tripod head (or ENG support) is rated for the combined camera+lens+viewfinder mass. For handheld ENG shoulder-rigs, the 204 mm length and weight are workable but front-heavy; use a lens support bracket or follow-focus arm to reduce operator fatigue on multi-hour shoots. Ensure your matte box (if used) clears the M82 filter thread.

The lens contains no active cooling; heat dissipation is passive. It is not thermally power-constrained and poses no electrical load risk. Operational environment limits follow standard broadcast lens practice: 0–40 °C ambient (confirm in your purchase spec sheet), humidity up to 80% non-condensing, and standard dust/salt-spray protection typical of cinema optics. In outdoor summer shoots, avoid prolonged direct sunlight on the barrel; use a lens hood and sunshade. No special cooling infrastructure is required in OB vans or studio rigs.

The HA18x7.6BERD has no user-serviceable wear items; internal servo mechanisms and lens elements are sealed. Standard maintenance is cleaning the front element (M82 filter threads accept standard 82 mm protective/ND filters and lens hoods). Servo cables and connectors are standard B4 Fujinon connectors; replacement cables are widely available. If internal mechanical issues arise, return to Fujinon service or an authorized center—field repair is not practical. The built-in 2× extender is internal to the optical design and cannot be physically removed. Adding external 1.4× or 2× converters between the lens and camera is mechanically and optically possible but not recommended: the combination degrades image quality, introduces stacking aberrations, and may confuse iris metering. The integrated extender (7.6–137 mm native, 15.2–274 mm extended) covers most broadcast scenarios. If ultra-telephoto performance is critical, evaluate a dedicated long-throw lens instead of stacking optics on this platform.

The HA18x7.6BERD itself does not contain user-updatable firmware; servo behavior is determined by the camera's CCU firmware and physical lens mechanics. If servo response slows or becomes erratic, the issue typically originates in the camera's CCU, RCP, or servo cable contamination. Troubleshooting steps: confirm CCU firmware is current, inspect servo connectors for corrosion or debris, and test with a known-good servo cable.
