Ross Video Carbonite Black Solo 2M/E – Video Mixers

The family includes the original Carbonite frames (CF-x16/CF-x24, 1 or 2 MEs with 16 or 24 inputs, in Standard, Plus, MultiMedia and eXtreme variants; 1-ME frames can be upgraded to 2 MEs with a license), the 2RU Carbonite Black series (Black, Black Plus, Black Plus 12G), the standalone Carbonite Black Solo (9-input and 13-input versions), and the current generation: Carbonite Ultra, the modular Carbonite Ultra 60 (up to 60 inputs / 25 outputs, three full MEs in HD or UHD), Ultra Solo, Ultrix Carbonite, Carbonite HyperMax and the software-based, NDI-native Carbonite Code. Identify the unit by its frame model designation; the exact frame of this unit should be confirmed before purchase.

This depends on the Carbonite version. Carbonite Black, Black Solo and Carbonite Ultra all support SD 480i/576i and HD 720p/1080i/1080pSF. Carbonite Black adds 3G 1080p at 29.97/50/59.94 and, in UHD mode, 2160p at 50/59.94 (Ross lists v14.0.0 as the current UHD-mode software). Carbonite Black Plus 12G and Carbonite Ultra support 2160p over single-link 12Gb/s SDI, with Ultra rated for 2160p at 23.98/24/25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60. Format support for the original CF-series frames is not detailed on Ross's current pages and should be checked per unit.

Carbonite Black runs 2 or 3 full MEs (ME 3 is an additional license) plus 4 MiniMEs in SD/HD/3G; in UHD mode resources reduce to 1 full ME and 2 MiniMEs. Each full ME carries 5 keyers (4 full keyers + 1 transition keyer) and each MiniME carries 2. Carbonite Black Solo provides 1 ME and 2 MiniMEs with 9 keyers in total. Carbonite Ultra offers up to 3 full MEs and 4 MiniMEs in HD, or up to 2 MEs and 2 MiniMEs in UHD. 2D DVE count is 4 or 8 assignable on Carbonite Black, and 8 (HD) or 4 (UHD) on Carbonite Ultra.

Carbonite Black includes 2 UltraChrome chroma keyers as standard; the companion UltraChromeHR platform ships with 2 chroma keyers and offers Keyer 3 and Keyer 4 as optional licenses. Carbonite Black Solo includes 1 UltraChrome keyer. Carbonite Ultra provides 4 UltraChrome chroma keyers in SD/HD operation (2 in UHD). Verify which chroma key licenses are active on the specific unit.

Carbonite Black, Black Solo and Carbonite Ultra each use a single reference input accepting tri-level HD sync or analog SD black burst (HD-BNC connector on Ultra). Carbonite Black provides 34 GPI/O and 34 tallies, 2 Ethernet ports and 2 AES audio outputs; Black Solo provides 24 GPI/O and 24 tallies plus 6 freely-assignable frame synchronizers; Ultra provides 24 GPI/O plus an RS-422 editor port. Counts vary with the Carbonite version.

Carbonite Black and Carbonite Ultra include 4 MediaStore channels sharing 8GB of capacity (2 channels in UHD mode on Ultra), accepting .png and .tga stills with or without alpha, .bmp and .jpg without alpha, and 48 kHz .wav audio files. Ross's Carbonite Black specifications also list XPression graphics-creation software as included with the switcher.

Carbonite frames are operated from Ross hardware control panels — which Ross lists as a separate product category (TouchDrive and Acuity panels) — and from Ross DashBoard control software. Carbonite Ultra additionally supports the RossTalk control protocol and provides an Ethernet port and an RS-422 editor port. Confirm whether a control panel is included with this unit and which panel model it is.

Ross Video moved Carbonite Black, Black Plus, Black Plus 12G, Mosaic and UltrachromeHR to End of Production status effective April 1, 2023, and states that product support continues for 7 years after End of Production. Software maintenance for the Black frame reached v15.6.1a (Panel 1.5.533, DashBoard 9.2.2). The original CF-series frames likewise appear on Ross's legacy product resources. Before purchase, verify the installed software version and licensed options (ME 3, UHD mode, additional chroma keyers) on the specific unit.
