Blackmagic Design Blackmagic Videohub 40x40 12G โ Video Matrix
This Blackmagic Design Videohub 40x40 is an SDI routing switcher for broadcast facilities, providing 40 SDI inputs and 40 SDI outputs in a compact 2RU frame.
Description
This Blackmagic Design Videohub 40x40 is an SDI routing switcher for broadcast facilities, providing 40 SDI inputs and 40 SDI outputs in a compact 2RU frame. Each input is detected independently, so any combination of SD, HD and Ultra HD can be routed across the matrix at the same time, while SDI re-clocking on the outputs maintains signal integrity. A tri-sync/black burst reference input and redundant AC power connections support facility integration, and the front panel provides local routing via a built-in color LCD with control buttons and rotary selection. Routing can also be managed over Ethernet using the included Videohub control software for Mac and Windows, or from Videohub hardware control panels. Typical applications include studio galleries, OB vans, fly-packs and central apparatus rooms.

FAQ
What SDI signal types and frame rates does the VIDEOHUB 40X40 support?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 is a 12G SDI matrix, supporting 12G-SDI, 6G-SDI, and 3G-SDI signals. This enables HD (1080p), 4K DCI, and UHD 4K formats across variable frame rates (23.98โ60 fps). All 40 inputs and 40 outputs handle these rates simultaneously without format negotiation per port. Verify your camera, router, and monitoring output specs match these SDI generations for seamless integration.
Can the VIDEOHUB 40X40 integrate with my existing Blackmagic Design control ecosystem?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 supports industry-standard control protocols including Ethernet-based management and serial control interfaces. It integrates with Blackmagic Design panels, automation systems, and third-party control surfaces via documented APIs. Confirm your RCP, CCU, or control software supports Blackmagic Design matrix protocols and obtain the latest firmware to ensure compatibility with your workflow.
What power supply and cooling requirements should I plan for in an OB van or fixed installation?+
The unit includes integrated ventilation and a single power supply (specifications vary by regional configuration). In compact OB van deployments, ensure adequate airflow around the rear panel exhaust and plan 19-inch rack space for cable management. Verify AC input voltage and amperage requirements against your vehicle or facility power distribution before installation. Consult Blackmagic Design documentation for thermal dissipation rates.
How many concurrent routing operations can I perform, and are there any latency concerns?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 supports full 40ร40 matrix switching with minimal SDI propagation latency inherent to the 12G-SDI standard. Real-time routing changes do not introduce frame delay or signal dropout when properly configured. For multi-layer automation or rapid switching sequences, test your control protocol and panel responsiveness with your specific workflow before broadcast deployment.
What happens if I need to scale beyond 40 inputs and 40 outputs?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 is a fixed-size matrix; it cannot be expanded internally. Scaling requires a second VIDEOHUB 40X40 unit or a larger Blackmagic Design matrix model. Multiple units can be cascaded via external SDI routing and centralized control, but this requires additional infrastructure planning. Evaluate your future input/output growth before purchase to avoid costly re-architecture.
Are redundancy or backup routing paths available on this unit?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 does not feature built-in redundancy or automatic failover paths. For mission-critical OB or live production, implement redundancy at the infrastructure level: dual independent matrices, backup SDI runs, or external bypass switching. Document failover procedures and test recovery protocols to meet your SLA requirements.
What remote management and monitoring capabilities does the VIDEOHUB 40X40 provide?+
The unit supports Ethernet-based remote monitoring and control via a web interface and API endpoints for integration with broadcast automation or monitoring platforms. You can view routing status, manage presets, and configure the matrix remotely. Ensure your network infrastructure is isolated or segmented for security; verify firmware version and available monitoring metrics match your facility management toolset.
Which accessories and third-party routers or switchers are compatible with the VIDEOHUB 40X40?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 integrates with any 12G-SDI, 6G-SDI, or 3G-SDI source or destination: cameras, monitors, mixers, routers, and effects units. 12G-SDI BNC connectors are standard. No proprietary cables or adapters are required for basic SDI routing. For control integration beyond SDI, verify that your mixer, CCU, or automation platform supports the Blackmagic Design control protocol and Ethernet connectivity.
What maintenance or serviceability considerations should I plan for long-term operation?+
The VIDEOHUB 40X40 requires regular rack airflow inspection and dust filter cleaning, particularly in touring or outdoor OB deployments. Internal components are not field-serviceable; failed units require return to Blackmagic Design authorized service. Plan spare SDI cables and connectors for field repairs. Document your routing presets and control configurations for rapid recovery after any service event.
Are your used / ex-demo units tested and warranted?+
Yes. Our used and ex-demo units undergo a full functional inspection โ sensors, video outputs, control signals, optics and mechanics โ including a colorimetry and sensitivity test. Each product is tested by our technicians and comes with a 90-day warranty. Contact us for the specific warranty terms of the unit you are interested in.
